Unfortunately, "JET" are back
September 8th 2006 13:05
As we grow older, we often look back at times gone by, and realize a few mistakes that, if given the chance, we would gladly correct. Unfortunately, I was recently given a painful reminder of band whom I used to like : Jet.
When I first heard Jet, I though, "Hey, not bad, this is similar to the music I like." After a few listens, the sensation that I had heard this all before grew even stronger, before it hit me: it wasn't similar to the music I liked ...it WAS the very same music!!!
Oh, how foolish I had been. Don't believe me? Here's the proof. Listen to "Are You Gonna Be My Girl?" ( or just remember those annoying Vodafone ads ) . Now listen to "Lust for Life", by Iggy & The Stooges. An even more blatant example is the song "Look What You've Done". Here's a sample of the lyrics:
Oh, look what you've done
You've made a fool of everyone
A fool of everyone
A fool of everyone
Now take a look at the lyrics from "Sexy Sadie", by The Beatles:
Sexy Sadie what have you done
You made a fool of everyone
You made a fool of everyone
Sexy Sadie ooh what have you done.
They even tried, but somehow failed, to rip off the cover. Compare the cover for "Get Born" with "Revolver", the famous Beatles album.
My beef with Jet is not that they sound like other, much better bands. Wolfmother also imitate other bands, but their lyrics and riffs are original. If you're going to copy another bands tune, at least have the decency to call it a cover, rather than rip little bits off songs here and there. Led Zeppelin did a lot of covers, but they completely renovated them rather than playing exactly the same thing. Please do not buy the new Jet album, and expose them for the hacks that they are.
And Im currently listening to "Layla" by Derek & The Dominoes.

If a Uni. student did that for one of their assignments, they'd be screwed over for plagiarism. Not cool!
