Cyndi Lauper and Dr. John made a stop in Orlando, Florida on their From Memphis to New Orleans recent tour. The House of Blues hosted this event. Dr. John opened the show with dual pianos facing each other. Walking out with a cane, he sat down and began to play. The crowd sang along and even danced to the tunes. He did all of his hit songs and even got up to dance himself. The crowd cheered quite loudly when he did this. Playing both pianos as he straddled the seat in between seemed to thrill the crowd. His performance leads into an explosive performance by Cyndi Lauper.
Cyndi walked out on the stage with the New York attitude you knew she would have. After kicking the photographer out of the pit, she explained that she did not like to have cameras in her face. She went right into a classic song from her. Most of her songs were from the 80s, but she has some new ones she worked into the set to the delight of the crowd. She danced all over the stage. Her energy fed the crowd. As much as she gave to us, we gave to her. During a few songs, she got down into the photo pit and leaned into the audience to sing. It was a joy to see her want to be a part of crowd. She has been doing this for years and will continue to do so with very much success.

Soundtracks

Movie, TV show, and play soundtracks, often times, are what make us interested in the movies, TV show or play. There are times when we buy the soundtrack because we want to remember our favorite episode, part of the movie, or relive the play. The music used in the movies, TV shows and play can be the best part of the program.
It used to be that the music was just a score. Nowadays, it is an artist, sometimes famous sometimes not, who will contribute to a soundtrack. There are also soundtracks that have only one artist to come up with the music for the entire film. For instance, all of the Transformer movies consist of only music from Linkin Park. Musicians, local and national, look to obtain a spot on the soundtrack of a movie or TV show. This is their opportunity to really bring their music to a world wide audience. A lot of artist get discovered on soundtracks and become instantly popular. This makes soundtracks a hot bed of undiscovered music. Having purchased several soundtracks over the years, I have discovered artist I may have never known about. I tend to look up each artist after I have gone through the soundtrack and the liner notes to discover each song.

Soundtracks are a big part of life. We may even have our own soundtrack to our lives. There may be certain songs that mean so much to us or transport us back in time to a favorite memory. What’s your favorite soundtrack or the soundtrack to your life?

Bon Jovi Review

I had a chance to see Bon Jovi in concert when they came to Orlando, Fl. I was not expecting the show I received. You would think that a band with as big a fan base as they have would not put on such an energetic show because they do not have to. I have seen some bands do this because they think just their music alone will keep the fans coming back. But, Bon Jovi seems to be the exception to this rule. They continue to put on a show that will shock their audiences. Riche Sambora was in rehab while they were touring through my state, but Phil X did a phenomenal job replacing him. I had heard that a lot of people refunded their tickets or sold them to other people when they found out that Richie would not be playing. I would like to state that was a mistake, because what the hole that was there without Richie was expertly filled by Phil.
The energy of the band was evident as soon as they took the stage. The audience fed off of it and the band fed off the audience’s energy in return. Jon utilizes the entire stage when he performs and when he is unable to do that, he makes sure there is a giant screen there so the audience who is behind him does not miss a thing. This is one national act I would recommend seeing, even if you are not the biggest Bon Jovi fan. You will surely enjoy this high energetic show and they may even change your mind about their music.

Nu ERA

If you have never heard of nuERA from Orlando, Florida, then you are missing out on a great band to listen to. This band has shades of Linkin Park, just better. With Jeremy Hyson on vocals and John Robot as the MC/Sample man, you cannot go wrong listening to these guys. Jay Mueller and Sean Stahl take playing guitar to a whole new level. Ryan Shelton’s bass playing and Don Cadman’s drum playing set the groove for this nu-metal band. They draw the inspiration from a plentitude of acts, including the hip-hop, metal, hardcore, and nu-metal styles of music.

They have already shared the stage with national acts, such as Sevendust, Coheed and Cambria, Straight line Stitch, Nonpoint, and Taproot. Their full length album is, currently, being recorded by Adam Barbara. They have released their EP with 5 songs and it has seen radio airplay. They are looking to release the full length album by the end of this summer. Make sure to look for it on iTunes and reverbnation. You can even “like” their page on facebook.

Christian Kane – “The House Rules” CD Review

Your text goes hereYou may know his name and face from shows like Angel, Leverage, and Fame L.A., or even from movies like Just Married, Love Song, or Hide, but did you know that Christian Kane was also a musician? He actually was a musician long before he was an actor. He obtained his first acting gig because he was a musician. His new CD is taking us back to his roots and his first love, country music. “The House Rules” was released on December 7th. From partying songs, such as the title track, to ballads, like “Let Me Go,” you really cannot go wrong with this CD. If you are a fan of country music, then it is essential that you check out this country star on the rise. You are able to tell that some of his songs have more of a rock influence to them, but they should appeal to any country fan. If you are a fan of Jason AldeanJason Aldean, then you will definitely like Christian Kane. There is a certain serenity that comes over you when you are listening to this CD. With songs that can match any mood you may be feeling, he really knows how to touch you to your inner core.
Well written lyrics with the perfect accompaniment will serve your ears and soul the perfect musical feast. Some old school country influences can be heard in songs like “Let’s Take a Drive,” and “Making Circles.” There is even a remake of “Fast Cars” by Tracy ChapmanTracy Chapman, which is so well done it will even impress the most cynical music critic. Music fans everywhere need to pay attention to this musician/actor on the rise.

Darius Rucker- Charleston, S.C. 1966

If you have ever liked Hootie and the BlowfishHootie and the Blowfish, then you know who Darius Rucker is. His name is synonymous with heart felt, fun loving music. He has recently reinvented himself to become a country star and the singles he has released off of his second album have been well received. The entire album became available on Tuesday for purchase and downloadable on iTunes.
You will find music that is similar to what you are used to with Darius’s writing. You will also find music that may surprise you, such as the humorous song titled “I Don’t Care” with well known country artist Brad PaisleyBrad Paisley. I do not know if the pairing of these two artists was done by the record company or if the each had a mutual respect for one another’s music. Either way, it is a great song and one of my favorites on this debut release. I have a feeling that Mr. Rucker will have a great career in the country music genre like he did in the R&B/Rock genre.
You cannot deny that he can write a song that will tug at your heart strings as well as make you smile and want to dance. This album should be at the top of the charts and soon. You will go through a whirlwind of emotions as you take a listen to the entire CD. Get your copy today, because it will be one of the best CDs you will hear this year and into next year

Goo Goo Dolls Review

Hard Rock Live in Orlando, located just inside the confines of City Walk on Universal Boulevard, is one of the premier concert venues, and for good reason. The “pit” area is huge; the balcony above has ample seating for those who do not like to be in the pit, and the bar has all the liquor you can imagine.

The Rocket Summer was the opening act. They were all over the stage, and even in the audience. There is even a portion of the performance where the lead singer plays every single instrument. Playing such songs as “Roses,” “Hills and Valleys,” and “Walls,” which has been featured on NBC’s Friday Night Lights and The Biggest Loser, they really had the crowd’s attention. Even those who didn’t know who they were before they went to the show definitely left impressed by this very young band.

Gorillafight

Prefer the metal genre? Then you definitely need to check out Gorillafight. This band will not only melt your face, but they will also cause you head to bang, even if you have never done it before. You may even find yourself in the moshpit. These guys will bring out the lust for metal within your sole. If you have never listened to metal before, or thought it was too much for you too handle, the sound that these five gentlemen produce will, not only change your mind about the genre, but they will leave you craving more.
Mike and Brian’s guitar combination will draw you in, Kevin’s hard hitting drums, and Chucky’s rhythmic bass playing will keep you there, and David’s vocal ability will lead you to the point of no return. Once you have seen these guys once, you will want to see them as many times as you possibly can. You will get so into their music and stage presence that once their set ends you will find yourself disappointed that it did not go on longer. They bring out the true metal lover in everyone that sees their shows.
They have yet to produce a full length CD or an EP, but I am sure as soon as they get it done, it will be snatched up. If you happen to be in the Central Florida area or plan on taking a trip this summer, make it for a time where you can catch these guys at a show. They have a video on YouTube, plus a MySpace page, and a Facebook group, which will both keep you updated on what this tremendous band has coming up. Make sure you check them out as soon as possible.

Tyrone Wells/Tony Lucca/Roy Jay Review

Lately, I have been so busy I can barely leave the house. But, if I plan it out properly I can take the time to go see at least one or two live shows a month. I have learned how to coordinate due dates and my need for live music very well over the past few months. I took the time out of my busy schedule to attend this show, and I am glad I did.
Roy Jay’s music is not like the other singer/songwriters on this bill. He happens to take his music a little less serious, and writes some good upbeat and funny songs. He had the crowd at the Social in downtown Orlando smiling and laughing all the way through his set. He even premiered his video for the song “Prettiest Girl in Wal-Mart” for his hometown crowd. This guy has some of the funniest music I have heard in a long time. It was refreshing to hear him sing. Make sure to keep an eye on his tour dates.
Having been a fan of Tony Lucca for quite a few years, this is the first opportunity I have had to catch him at a live show. He is one of the more talented unsigned musicians out there. It perplexes me as to why he has not been snatched up by a record label yet. He writes his songs based on his real life experiences, stemming all the way back from when he was a teenager. From most of the videos I have seen of him, it is generally just him and his guitar. I think that says something about an artist. When you can play your music alone and have the confidence to know that people will still listen and respond well to it, then you know that you are one of the better songwriters out there. If you have yet to ever see him, make sure to do so. Check out when Tony will be rolling into your town by watching his tour dates.

A Discussion of Musical Genres

Sub-genres in music have to be some of the stupidest things I have ever heard of, especially when they are argued about whether or not a band qualifies as part of that genre. I consider music just that music, but since the industry likes to label the music with genres, let’s take the time to explore them. Pop has bubblegum pop, pop/rock, and just pop. Bubblegum pop is meant for the teenagers and kids of the world with the innocent lyrics and catchy hooks and beats. Pop/rock leans a little more toward the rock end with the harder guitars and drums being used. Pop is meant for popular music and rightfully I feel that any genre’s music that appeals to the masses should be able to put their music in this category, but according to the industry the only ones that are allowed to do so are the Britney Spears and Fall Out Boy’s of the world.
Rock has a few genres, such as classic rock, soft rock, rock, hard rock. Classic rock is anything that happened over 20 years ago. This includes some of Bon Jovi’s music, who is still going strong today. Do you think they ever thought that they would still be playing music and have some of their stuff considered classic rock at the same time? Soft rock is more like the ballads of our time, some say it is the sappy version of songs and for the people that are just finding love or suffering the ultimate heartbreak. This can be held true for any music really, because essentially that is what music from any genre is written about, some kind of heartbreak. Rock covers a large spectrum, incorporating pop/rock, and just that music that you are unsure if it is hard or soft. Hard rock is on the edge of heavy metal but not quite there. You have bands like Def Leppard, Van Halen, and all the hair bands from the 80s that were categorized as this type of music, which leads me into the heavy metal category.
This category is the most argued in the industry. There is metal, heavy metal, nu metal, hardcore, grindcore, death and black metal. It had been said that hardcore and grindcore are not known as metal, but ultimately it you are growling and screaming with the hardest drums and guitars out there, it can be considered metal. Most of the time in any of genres you can barely understand what the person is saying, so to the average music listener it is all the same, but to the metal enthusiast it is not the same. There will not be a time in history that this genre of music will not be argued and the people placed in each of these categories will go as far as not liking the other sub-genres music because they are not the same. 20WT

There is a little band I would like to tell you about, they are called 20WT (Twenty Weight). This band is a fusion of reggae, ska, and metal. You would never expect to hear all three genres mixed together to become one. These guys will blow your mind when they hit that stage. It is amazing what a three piece band can do. They began creating their music in 2001. Ryan, the lead guitar player and singer, and Jay, the bass player met when they were teenagers and have been writing and playing music ever since. In 2007, the found the perfect drummer, Dave. Ever since then the band has been writing hard and playing harder. This mix of genres is one of the most original things I have ever seen. From Ryan’s vocal range and guitar playing to Jay’s energetic bass playing and Dave’s kick you in the gut drums, you can’t go wrong with a little 20WT in your life. We simply can’t forget about Cousin Andy who runs their merchandise table. He is one of the hardest working merchandise people I have ever seen. Once the band is done and one of them can sit and watch the merchandise he will walk around with a clipboard to get people to sign up for their mailing address. This band will send emails out and even give you links to pass along to your friends for them to checkout and download some of their music for free. These guys are simply something to be seen. If you are looking for originality, then this the band you should be seeing or at least listening to. They love meeting new fans and traveling all over Florida to do it. Every weekend they have two to three shows and they are even looking to possibly take this thing nation wide, if not further.
These guys call me their stalker. It is said all in good fun and I most likely am their one and only follower from a few towns. I have seen them play in three different towns and I am proud to show up to a few different cities to see them create their craft on stage. They are definitely a band that takes their music as serious as they take their partying off the stage. Once they have played, they like to mingle and drink with the crowd that is at the venue, thus creating a rapport and building up their fan base in each town they play in. This definitely has the makings of an already popular band to take their lively hood even farther.
I have seen it many times before when a band gets on and off stage they will either sit in the corner mingling with their band mates, ignoring the fans, or only speak to those that have been around a while. This band is not like that and I am proud to call myself a fan and friend of them. If you want to check the out be sure to check out their website, MySpace, or facebook.

Hurt, Sick Puppies, Adelitas Way

Have you ever been waiting to see a band for a few years and suddenly you get the opportunity only to have them exceed your expectations? Yeah, that is what this concert was for me.
It was my third encounter with Adelitas Way. They never fail to amaze me when they take the stage. These five guys are very high energy and will perform to the best of their abilities, to the amazement of the crowd who may have never seen them before. There is never a lack of energy when it comes to these guys. They have toured with Saliva, Hurt and are currently touring the country with Shinedown. Be sure you check them out, you will not be disappointed.

No Judgements

I have come to the realization that not every band will sound the same as they do on their myspace pages or their websites. It takes a good sound man to create the perfect combination of instruments and voices in order to make them sound as good as they should. Sometimes the bands themselves are unable to get the high quality recordings together in order to sound they way they should be mixed, so people will be intrigued enough to come out and see them play. There should not be judgments cast upon these bands until you are able to see them perform live in front of a crowd. Then and only then can you make a decision on whether or not you are going to see them again. A sound man will mix the elements of that band to make you listen to them in the proper setting and then you are hearing them properly. Once you have listened to their set, you can see how they are meant to be heard and absorb the true meaning and feeling of their music. The passion put behind the songs will come through during a live performance. Make sure that you check out you local bands, even if you don’t like what is on their pages because you never know what is going to touch your soul.

Music Is My Solace.

If I had a nickel for every time some one asked me what my favorite type of music was I think I would be rich. I don’t discriminate against and kind of music. Music to me is what drives my soul. It is my one true lover, the one that has never left my side or left me heart broken. Ok yes there are those heart wrenching songs that will bring a tear to my eye every now and again but it is a rarity that I actually find them on the radio. Most of the time it is the local acts that write the song that strike a cord that sings to my very core.
Gorillafight is a five piece metal/hardcore/rock band that hails from Orlando, Fl and consists of Dave; vocals, Brian; guitar, Chucky; bass, Mike; guitar and Kevin; drums. I have seen them a few times now and I have to say they definitely feed off the energy of the crowd. The rowdier the crowd the more energetic this band seems to get. In one of my previous articles I talked about a band called (un)SAID, these two bands have shared the stage quite a few times and it is definitely something not to be missed. It is like they challenge either other on who is going to be more into it that night. These guys are currently working on a long awaited CD. For now they have one song on their profile called “A Place in the Sun” that will keep you satisfied. I, as I am sure there other fans feel the same way, cannot wait for them to release it. Thomas Wynn & the Believers is a five piece rock/country/southern rock band that hails from Orlando, Fl and consists of Thomas Wynn; lead vocals and guitar, Olivia Wynn; vocals, organ and piano, Justin Beckler; guitar, Showcat Luise; bass and Thom Damon; drums. From their song that will make your heart melt called “Desert Rose” to the songs that make you want to dance like “Hard Road” there is something to be said about this band that can take you from one extreme to the next.
